HDMI works by the use of transition-minimized differential signaling technology to transfer information or data from one location to another. The transition-minimized differential signaling (TDMS) is a technique that protects information from degradation as it travels down the cable length from one device to another.
There are two most important differences between VGA and HDMI interfaces. The first one is that VGA is an analog interface. HDMI is a digital one. The second difference is that VGA is a video interface and HDMI includes both audio and video.
There really is no difference between a cable marketed as 4K and one that is not. But there is a label that does matter, and that is the speed rating. Speed will dictate the maximum bandwidth allowed by the cable.
A High Definition TV with 1080p resolution is composed of two million pixels (1920 x 1080), while a 4K TV (aka Ultra High Definition) has over eight million pixels (3840 x 2160). Therefore, 4K has around four times more resolution than 1080p and produces a clearer picture.
HDMI uses five main connector types: Type A, B, C, D, and E, each for different applications – these include the standard connector as well as the mini-HDMI and micro-HDMI.
The key benefit of HDMI is its ability to transport a high bandwidth of data (video, audio and now 3D and Ethernet) using a single cable. For the average consumer, the ability to connect their TV and DVD player with just one cable certainly makes setting up a home entertainment system less daunting.
If your two devices don’t have the same kind of HDMI port, it doesn’t mean they’re incompatible. There are HDMI cables available with every different combination of HDMI port on the ends, so you can always find a way to connect any two HDMI-capable devices.
Not all computers have an HDMI port. Some older computer may use a VGA or DVI cable. You can connect these to the HDMI port of a TV using an adapter and a separate audio cable. If you are using a laptop that does not have an HDMI or other video-out port, you can purchase a USB-to-HDMI adapter.
HDMI 1.4 cables support 4K video at 30Hz frame rates. HDMI 2.0 versions (including HDMI 2.0, HDMI 2.0, and HDMI 2.0b) came out after HDMI 1.4 and use Premium High-Speed cables for much wider 4K resolution and HDR support.
